Dal tadka with pasta

Ingredients :

For tadka – means cook spices in oil

2 tablespoon oil

1 onion chopped

2 tomatoes chopped

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 tsp ginger garlic paste

few curry leaves

For the dal

1.5 cups dhall gramme or chana dhall

5.5 cups of water

pinch of salt

1 teaspoon turmeric powder

For pasta

3 cups large shells San Remo

Add one cup of water

pinch of salt

Procedures :

  1. Remove any impurities from the dhall. Wash thoroughly the dhall till the water is clear. Then drain the water and reserve.
  2. In a large plate, prepare the following ingredients for the tadka – 1 chopped onion, 2 tomatoes chopped, 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds, 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds, 1 tbsp of ginger garlic paste, a few curry leaves washed.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoon of oil in a pressure cooker.
  4. Once the oil is heated, add the mustard seeds, the cumin seeds, the ginger garlic paste, few curry leaves. Fry on low heat and keep stirring to cook.
  5. Then add onions and tomatoes and cook again for a few minutes.
  6. Add 1.5 cups of dhall and 5.5 cups of water. Add some salt and turmeric powder. Give a stir. Close the lid and allow to cook. After a few whistles remove the pressure cooker from heat and check if the dhall is cooked. If not cooked, close the lid and cook the dal again.
  7. Once the dal is cooked and is soft, add 3 cups of large shells San Remo. Add one more cup of water and a pinch of salt. Give a stir. Close the pressure cooker lid and let cook for some minutes.
  8. After some whistles check for the softness of the shells. If well cooked remove from heat. Otherwise keep cooking.
  9. Serve hot with coconut chutney, salty fish or tomato chutney or pickles !
